India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables with production of nearly 200 million metric tonnes, valued at over Rs 2100 billion. Also, the country ranks first in the world in milk production (115 million metric tonnes), third in foodgrains production (218 million metric tonnes and third in fish production (6.4 million metric tonnes). Each day, it consumes 9000 trucks of fruits, 14,000 tucks of vegetables, 4000 trucks of potatoes, 8000 trucks of onions and 1.3 million chickens. This produce reaches nearby mandies and is sold through commission agents to wholesalers, subwholesalers
and then to retailers.
