Term Definition
Acid-Test Ratio
A measurement of how well a business can meet its short-term financial obligations without selling any inventory.
Adjacency
The examination of affinities between products to help plan the layout of a store to maximize add on sales.
Advance Ship Notice
(Also known as ASN) Electronic communication from a supplier to a retailer advising of purchase order information and merchandise being shipped. This information helps the retailer maximize efficiencies in the Distribution Centres as well as aiding the merchant in understanding their assortment.

A supplier's listing of item's sent to a retailer prior to an invoice
Affinity Item
An item whose purchase is closely linked to another such as apple pie and ice cream or shirt and tie. The affinity between these products can be exploited in a promotion.
Allocation
The process of determining the quantity of an item to be assigned to each store either as a first delivery of a new item or as a special delivery for an item on promotion.
Anchor Store
A major retail store used to drive business to smaller retailers. These larger department stores or grocery stores are generally part of a retail chain and are the prominent business in a shopping mall.
Apparel
All forms of clothing ranging from intimate apparel to outwear.
ASN

Assortment
Also called Range. A collection of products that provides the consumer with real choice of a variety of price points.
Assortment Breadth
A way of measuring the number of different product products available within a category. A category is said to be broad if it contains a wide number of products within the classification.
Assortment Depth
A way of measuring the quantity of each item available in the assortment of goods offered to the customer. An assortment containing items in large quantities with a variety of sizes is said to be deep.
Automatic Cancellation Date
The date specified by the buyer on the merchandise purchase order (PO) as the latest acceptable receiving date. After this date
Back Order
An order that cannot be immediately fulfilled due to an out-of-stock situation at the supplier. The order will be fulfilled when stock becomes available.
Bar Code
A machine-readable code in the form of parallel lines that can be read optically and read by a scanner. Bar codes are unique to a product. They have become the standard in retail due to their cost and speed at the point of sale.
