This paper aims to provide a high-level understanding of the environmental impacts of different kinds of bags, and identify the types and magnitudes of environmental impacts associated with each kind of bag through a literature review of four publicly available life cycle assessment (LCA) studies. It also endeavours to better understand how the environmental impacts of retail shopping bags can be reduced, including through means other than (or in addition to) choice of bag type, such as change in consumer behavior.
